HRSA Released National Home Visiting Workforce Strategy, Recognized National Home Visiting Week

This month, we recognized National Home Visiting Week, April 20–24, a nationwide observance celebrating the critical role home visitors play in improving maternal and child health, strengthening families, and supporting communities.  As part of this year’s observance, we released the National Strategy for the Home Visiting Workforce, a comprehensive effort to strengthen and grow the home visiting workforce.  The strategy focuses on building clear career pathways, investing in professional development opportunities, and supporting workforce well-being — key components of advancing maternal and child health.  Administrator Engels also visited the Madison and Dane County Public Health Department Nurse-Family Partnership program in Madison, Wis. to highlight the impact of HRSA’s Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program.  The program provided more than one million home visits to more than 150,000 families nationwide in fiscal year 2025.  Read the press release.

HRSA Participated in HHS Tribal Meetings

On April 22, Administrator Engels spoke at the HHS 28th Annual Tribal Budget and Policy Consultation to highlight HRSA’s ongoing efforts to address health workforce challenges across Indian Country, including a $16.9 million Tribal set-aside supporting clinicians through the National Health Service Corps, and improve maternal and child health through HRSA’s home visiting program and the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline.  HRSA continues to work closely with Tribal communities to improve health outcomes and expand access to quality, culturally responsive care.  Learn how HRSA supports tribes.

HRSA Honored National Donate Life Month, Advancing Organ Transplant System Modernization

On April 1, Administrator Engels visited Mid-America Transplant in St. Louis, Mo. to recognize National Donate Life Month – a time to honor the generosity of organ, eye, and tissue donors and families who make lifesaving donations possible.  During the visit, Administrator Engels toured Mid-America Transplant’s facilities, learning about their transplant operations and FAA-approved medical drone initiative, which will transport time-sensitive medical materials needed for organ transplantations and help save more lives.  Initiatives like these highlight HRSA’s continued focus on enhancing the organ donation and transplantation system and supporting patient access to critical, lifesaving services.  Read the press release.

Medetomidine Health Advisory

On April 2, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in conjunction with the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, issued a health advisory to notify public health professionals, clinicians, laboratorians, and people at risk for overdose about increasing reports from U.S. jurisdictions detecting medetomidine in the illegal drug supply and a severe withdrawal syndrome due to medetomidine exposure.  The advisory links clinicians to HRSA-supported resources, Poison Centers and the Substance Use Warmline:

  • Consult a toxicologist or contact your local Poison Center (1-800-222-1222) for advice on diagnosing and managing medetomidine toxicity or withdrawal.
  • Offer or arrange evidence-based treatment for substance use disorders including medications for patients with opioid use disorder.  For clinician support, the HRSA funded Substance Use Warmline offers confidential, free teleconsultation on substance use evaluation and management (844-275-6222; Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m. PT, excluding holidays).
