The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) recently released a video intended to raise awareness and provide practical education to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) covered entities and business associates of the HIPAA Security Rule’s Risk Management requirement.  Effective risk management is an essential component of both HIPAA Security Rule compliance and broader cybersecurity preparedness.

The EHIgnite Challenge is open

The EHIgnite Challenge invites participants to design solutions that improve the usability and value of single patient electronic health information (EHI) exports.  This will enable clinicians, patients, and care teams to better interpret and use exported health data in real-world settings.  Submissions must address summarization and at least one EHI use case scenario, such as interactive patient tools, domain-based filtering, integration across settings, streamlined payer workflows, or a participant-defined use case.  Phase 1 (Concept & Design) awards up to 9 prizes of $10,000 and is open until May 13, 2026.  Phase 1 winners will be invited to Phase 2.

What’s New in the 2026 ISA

We recently released the 2026 Interoperability Standards Advisory (ISA) Reference Edition!  This year’s update incorporates the Federal FHIR® Action Plan, which informs federal investment in and adoption of the HL7® FHIR standard.  Initially released in 2024, the action plan provides strategic direction for advancing shared decision-making, improving care coordination, and deepening patient engagement across federal agencies.  The plan will continue to evolve to reflect new federal investments and emerging industry trends.

Updated Data Element List Now Available: USCDI+ Behavioral Health

An updated USCDI+ Behavioral Health data element list is now available.  Both uses cases – Behavioral Health Overarching and Comprehensive Care – have been updated to further the goals of establishing, harmonizing, and advancing a core list of standardized, interoperable data elements to capture treatment data for individuals with mental health and substance use disorders.  These updated elements will be leveraged and tested by the nine nationwide pilot programs selected for HHS’ Behavioral Health Information Technology Initiative.
