In this edition of the Insider, we share new resources on patient-centered clinical decision support (PC CDS) measurement and the development of patient-facing apps that are interoperable with health information technology (IT) systems. |

Patient engagement is essential to advance high-quality, patient-centered healthcare. This process can take place throughout the development and implementation of PC CDS, from patients participating in clinical guideline development to actively using PC CDS tools in their care. However, the measurement of patient engagement in PC CDS remains limited, making it difficult to evaluate the impact of engagement or identify best practices. In response, the AHRQ CDSiC developed a first of its kind inventory of measures assessing patient engagement throughout the PC CDS lifecycle. The inventory is accompanied by a framework that inventory users can review to understand how patient engagement occurs throughout the lifecycle and ultimately contributes to improvements in healthcare delivery. A growing number of patient-facing apps are available on the commercial market, which serve as useful resources to support well-being and improve patient-centered care. However, most of these apps are not interoperable with health IT systems, such as electronic health records (EHRs). As a result, valuable patient data may remain separate from the EHR, limiting its use by clinicians and PC CDS tools. In response, the AHRQ CDSiC developed a new resource that outlines key considerations for advancing the interoperability of patient apps. It describes the ideal state of interoperability between clinical health IT systems and patient-facing apps, the types of data that can be exchanged, and the core data standards for interoperability. Together, this resource provides app developers with a concise overview of the information needed to advance this critical work. Check out all of the AHRQ CDSiC's resources on interoperability here! |
