Lecture Description:

This hands-on workshop focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, covering their causes, symptoms, and diagnostic strategies. Participants will review TMJ anatomy, pain mechanisms, and evidence-based clinical decision-making relevant to the management of TMD and associated orofacial pain conditions. Participants will gain practical experience through mannequin-based, simulation training in administering commonly used injection therapies for TMJ-related pain, including trigger point injections, botulinum toxin (Botox), and intra-articular injection techniques. Instruction will emphasize anatomical landmarks, dosing principles, injection technique, patient selection, safety considerations, complication avoidance, and informed consent. No live patient injections will be performed. The course will also address how injection-based therapies integrate with conservative modalities such as occlusal splints, physical therapy, and pharmacologic management. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing complex or refractory cases and understanding when referral to Orofacial Pain specialists or other healthcare providers is indicated for advanced care. The primum non nocere principle will guide participants in delivering safe, ethical, and effective patient care.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and diagnose common temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and understand their underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms.
  • Explain the role of conservative therapies, including occlusal splints, physical therapy, and pharmacologic management, in the comprehensive treatment of TMJ pain.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of orofacial injection anatomy and technique, including trigger point injections, botulinum toxin (Botox), and intra-articular injection approaches, through mannequin-based simulation training.
  • Recognize the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and determine when referral to an Orofacial Pain specialist or other healthcare providers is indicated for advanced or complex cases.
