GAO Issues Report on Improper Medicaid Managed Care Payments
The United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) has issued a report on improper payments in Medicaid managed care plans. GAO found that about three-quarters of Medicaid beneficiaries are in managed care, under which states pay private health plans a set fee per person to cover care, and that Medicaid managed care's improper payment estimate has been at or near 0% -- but that there are risks that are not accounted for in the estimate, including payments from managed care plans to providers for services that were not delivered, rendering the 0% estimate of questionable value.
