Modern Composites: What Every Dentist Needs to Know

Dental composites are essential to everyday clinical dentistry, supporting both esthetic and functional outcomes across a wide range of restorative procedures. With increasing patient demand for lifelike restorations and durable performance, selecting the right composite material has become more critical than ever. Today’s marketplace offers an array of advanced composite systems—each with unique chemistries, handling properties, and indications—making it vital for clinicians to understand what truly differentiates them.

Alongside material advancements, significant progress has also been made in adhesive technologies and light‑curing systems. From the evolution of multi‑generation bonding agents to the introduction of high‑performance curing lights, these innovations have a direct impact on clinical efficiency, predictability, and long‑term success.

This workshop provides a practical, evidence‑based review of the latest developments in dental composites, adhesives, and curing technologies. Participants will learn how to evaluate material properties, establish criteria for optimal selection, and integrate improved protocols into their routine practice. Hands‑on demonstrations will allow clinicians to experience the differences firsthand and gain confidence in choosing the most appropriate materials for tomorrow’s clinical cases.

2. Develop clear selection criteria to match composite, bonding, and curing options with specific clinical needs and treatment goals.
3. Evaluate and differentiate materials through demonstrations, gaining hands‑on experience with handling characteristics, performance attributes, and real‑world clinical applications.

Workshop Description:

Learning Objectives:

• Understand the principles and workflow of digital smile design (DSD) and how to apply them to composite cases
• Implement smile previews to enhance patient communication and case acceptance
• Navigate the lab collaboration process using Evident, from digital designs to 3D-printed models and stents
• Fabricate precise injection moulding stents in-house or with a lab, ensuring fit and function
• Select appropriate cases and shades, focusing on diagnostics, tooth morphology, and esthetic zones
• Perform the composite injection technique using high-viscosity composites with controlled layering
• Refine finishing and polishing protocols for long-term esthetic stability and natural results
• Troubleshoot common clinical challenges and learn tips for maintenance and repair

Speaker Information: Dr. Shashikant Singhal

Dr. Singhal is a distinguished dental professional, researcher, and industry leader with extensive expertise in restorative dentistry, dental materials, and clinical education. He began his academic training at the College of Dental Sciences in India, earning his Bachelor of Dental Surgery before establishing a successful private practice in Delhi.

Driven by a deep interest in biomaterials and evidence‑based dentistry, Dr. Singhal pursued advanced graduate studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. As part of the prestigious Advanced Clinical Dentistry Program with a specialization in Biomaterials, he conducted research on innovative dental materials and clinical protocols. His work has been presented at numerous national and international scientific conferences, and he was honored with a Graduate Fellowship Award for academic excellence and research contributions. 

In 2012, Dr. Singhal joined Ivoclar Vivadent, Inc. as a Clinical Specialist, where he played a key role in directing academic research, supporting new product development, and providing clinical guidance to dental professionals worldwide. His passion for education and clinical excellence quickly positioned him as a trusted resource within the dental community. Today, Dr. Singhal serves as the Director of Education and Professional Services for North America at Ivoclar Vivadent in Amherst, NY. In this leadership role, he oversees all educational initiatives across the region, collaborates on product innovation, and works closely with clinicians, universities, and key opinion leaders to advance high‑quality dental education.

Dr. Rahul Kallianpur 

Dr. Rahul Kallianpur grew up in Niskayuna, NY where his fascination with biology led him to pursue dentistry. After dental school at NYU, he gained further expertise through a residency program and dedicated hundreds of hours to continuing education in comprehensive and cosmetic dentistry. With a blend of clinical knowledge, artistic vision, and a passion for transforming smiles, Dr. Kallianpur opened Hudson Dental Co. to provide elite dentistry in a warm, welcoming environment. He stays at the forefront of innovations like digital dentistry so he can offer patients the latest advancements backed by sound science. Dr. Kallianpur finds joy in combining his technical skills and creative talents to boost confidence through smile makeovers. It is a privilege to change lives through his passion. Outside of the office, Dr. Kallianpur loves spending time with his wife and family, cooking, traveling, making cocktails, playing soccer, and is a music enthusiast.
