The United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) is highlighting the failure of the federal government to address public health information needs with respect to monkeypox and the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). GAO notes that more than 15 years ago the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) was directed by Congress through law to create a network that would provide real-time information on things like positive case numbers and resources that could help prevent the spread of diseases -- but that such a network still doesn’t exist.
