What is the ACD Mentoring Lecture Program:

The ACD Mentoring Lecture Program is structured so that it benefits everyone involved, creating a direct relationship between student and mentor. Experienced dentists have the opportunity to step up as mentors and students learn about the culture of leadership, ethics, and professionalism by example. The program has gained local recognition with all New York metropolitan area hospitals participating, helping to satisfy their ADA CODA requirements for ethics and practice management.

Lecture Description:

There are so many valuable core principles and practices for the working human. One that may not be considered is the value of “self-care” and “safe space” in building inner resilience to negotiate all aspects of daily life. Often, we think in silos. For example, work and home related issues are separate. Another, that body and mind are separate. While this is true for the purpose of organization, the elephant in the room is that everything is connected and hence everything matters. Building our inner resilience, that is the body’s capability to negotiate the day is essential. It requires a different kind of prescription and a body plan. In this brief conversation we will discuss a few simple and free ways to build inner resilience. With a stronger body and mind, we may become better equipped for the world of working human.

Speaker Information: Dr. Lois Jackson

Dr. Lois Jackson is the founding partner of Pediatric Dentists NYC, specializing in the treatment of all children and teens. She is a graduate of Barnard College and Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, earning both a dental degree and a specialty degree in pediatric dentistry. She also completed a general practice residency in the trauma center at Montefiore Medical Center, which provided valuable experience in emergency care.

Dr. Jackson says her favorite part of being a pediatric dentist is the kids. Her patients are treated with consideration to their treatment needs, but also to who they are as individuals. The opportunity to provide personalized dental care and create a positive attitude toward good oral health for each patient is her goal. She strives to create smiles!

As part of her commitment to children and their well-being, Dr. Jackson serves on the board of Camp Brooklyn, an organization that sends children to sleep away camp. This project makes lifetime memories for the campers who would not ordinarily have this experience. Dr. Jackson is also on the board of Flatbush Development Corporation, which maintains the urban experience for all community residents by funding after-school and summer programs for children and community events, among other programs. She is also a member of the Board of Advisors at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and the Continuing Education Committee of the New York County Dental Society.

Dr. Jackson travels extensively through the United States and will soon have visited every state and many national parks. She is a frequent visitor to New Orleans for the food, music and good times. She is an avid moviegoer and enjoys documentaries in particular. The Sundance Film Festival is a frequent vacation destination.

Dr. Jackson moved to Brooklyn before it was so cool and is thrilled with the evolution of the borough.

Speaker Information: Dr. Purnima Hernandez

Dr. Hernandez is triple board-certified in pediatric dentistry, applied behavior analysis and as a health and wellness coach. She has been serving the communities of New York and New Jersey for over 30 years. Dr. Hernandez received her education in Pediatric Dentistry and a Masters of Arts at Columbia University College of Dental medicine. After serving as an Assistant Professor for many years in the department of Pediatric dentistry she decided to pursue a career in the clinical practice of pediatric dentistry. In 2005 she established her own office in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. She then pursued a Masters in Applied Behavior Analysis from Caldwell University, New Jersey. While she delivers care to all children, her special interests are treating children with special healthcare needs, behavioral disorders and phobias. To better understand the lifestyle factors and how they influence health, she completed her Functional Medicine training at IFM. She continued her journey to become a board-certified health and wellness coach. For her learning only creates an opportunity to learn more. Sleep an important determinant of health, is her new deep dive.

Knowledge, supported by science, from these disciplines allows her to take a whole-body approach to promote overall wellness in the children she serves. Her favorite term is “bio-individuality” and brings a biological and person-centered approach to every family child dyad. She is excited about her new venture Lifestylist for Kids, LLC. Her vision is to improve health literacy and lifestyle in children of all ages.
