The maxilla and mandible are targets for a variety of conditions, including odontogenic and other local problems, systemic diseases, primary and metastastic malignancies and the adverse effects of radiation and drug therapies.
After a brief review of bone physiology and the normal process of bone renewal, this lecture will include:
- an update on bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis, including a new protocol for patients who require dental treatment and are using oral bisphosphonates
- a discussion of osteomyelitis and a review of actual cases stemming from simple extractions and implant placement
- a review of osteoradionecrosis and the role of the dentist in the prevention and management of this condition in head and neck cancer patients
- a review of other bone diseases of interest to the practicing dentist, including malignancies, renal osteodystrophy, osteopetrosis and Paget's
RESULTS: This course is a good overview of conditions affecting the jaw, which will allow participants to have a scientific basis when treatment planning these patients.
